Wine in Cyprus

Cyprus, has a rich history of winemaking that stretches back thousands of years. The island’s favorable climate, with ample sunshine and mild winters, along with its varied terrain, contribute to the cultivation of a diverse range of grape varieties. From ancient times to the present day, wine has been an integral part of Cypriot culture, cuisine, and economy.

Throughout its history, Cyprus has been under the influence of various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Venetians, all of whom contributed to the development of winemaking techniques and grape cultivation on the island.

One of the most famous wine varieties associated with Cyprus is Commandaria, which is recognized as one of the oldest named wines in the world still in production.

Commandaria is a sweet dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes and has been produced on the island for over 5,000 years. It was reportedly enjoyed by Richard the Lionheart during his wedding to Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 and has since gained international acclaim for its unique flavor and historical significance.

In addition to Commandaria, Cyprus produces a wide range of other wines, including both red and white varieties. Some of the most popular indigenous grape varieties grown on the island, including Mavro (for red wine), Xynisteri (for white wine) and Maratheftiko (used in both red and rosé wines).

Today, the Cypriot wine industry is experiencing a renaissance, with a growing number of boutique wineries producing high-quality wines for both domestic consumption and export.

Our guided winery tours include a visit to authentic villages and tasting at 2-3 wineries with light refreshments.
